How and where sunstone is formed
A plagioclase feldspar formed in slow cooling basaltic lava, sunstone has been found in Canada, the United States, Norway, Greece and India. It’s glistening effect or ‘aventurescence’ as it is known is caused by mineral inclusions of hematite, goethite, pyrite and in the case of the most famous sunstone deposits in Oregon, copper.
Sunstone throughout history
Also referred to as Heliolite from the Greek words for sun and stone, sunstone was known in Greek mythology to represent the sun god Ra. The Egyptians believed that it fell from the sun as a gift from Ra during a solar eclipse. Also appearing in Nordic history, the Vikings were said to use sunstone as a talisman for navigation, using its ability to shimmer in the light to guide them.
Native American legend has it that when a great warrior was wounded by an arrow, his blood dropped onto pieces of Oregon sunstone, infusing them with his warrior spirit and power and giving them their colour. Oregon natives once used sunstone for trade and barter, and it was officially declared their state mineral in 1987.

Gently clean with warm, soapy water and a soft cloth. Sunstone is a relatively softer gem so like all jewellery it should be handled with care, and stored separately in the box that it came in to protect it from damage and UV rays.
